Prof. Dr. Christoph Schalast in an interview about the possible takeover of Commerzbank

10.01.2025

UniCredit is already expanding its stake – according to its own statements, the major bank owns around 28 percent. After the federal government sold part of the Commerzbank shares, a takeover battle broke out that could lead to the loss of numerous jobs in Frankfurt if the two banks merge. In addition, there are growing indications that UniCredit wants to take over Commerzbank against the latter's will.

Prof. Dr. Christoph Schalast talks about this in an interview with the German television channel Sat. 1 presenter Markus Appelmann and explains: “Takeovers are easily possible within the European market – including in the financial sector. This is actually not a big issue. However, the peculiarity here is that in Germany we only have two large private financial institutions left after the financial crisis: Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank. Now there is a risk that one of the two will disappear”.
