Markus Ruhmann will become a new partner and head of the Real Estate practice group at Schalast on 1 April 2023. He joins with a team from BUSE including associate Lorenz Bock in Hamburg. Detlef Kuhlen will support the Real Estate team as Of Counsel. At Schalast, they will work closely with the energy law team, with the notary's office, with the banking & finance team, the corporate / M&A team, the tax team and the audit team. With this expansion, Schalast is strengthening its nationwide real estate law expertise, which is also complemented internationally by the network of multilaw partner firms.

As a specialist lawyer for construction and architectural law as well as for public procurement law, Markus Ruhmann has specialised for more than 20 years in advising on the corporate, tax and financial structuring of real estate projects, in construction planning and building regulations law as well as in private construction law. Among other things, he supports institutional investors in the acquisition of real estate projects as forward share or asset deals, including investment law, tax and financial aspects from a single source (such as the acquisition of the "Salucci-Höfe" project for ZBI). He has particular experience in infrastructure projects, redevelopment of built-up areas and urban development. As a specialist in procurement and award procedures, he advises public clients such as cities, states, municipalities and federal and state institutions. Among other things, he has accompanied such renowned projects as the procurement of urban planning for Hamburg's new Grasbrook district or the heat supply of Hamburg's new Oberbillwerder district with predominantly wastewater heat.

Markus Ruhmann comments: "I am very pleased to join Schalast. Here, there are the best conditions - especially through the cooperation with the energy law team - to set new accents for the transformation of the real estate industry and the implementation of ESG requirements. This applies in particular to topics such as sustainable construction, future-oriented neighbourhood and urban planning and innovation drivers in the industry, e.g. start-ups in the areas of proptech or future mobilities. As a climate-neutral law firm, Schalast is an authentic companion for its clients in the implementation of the UN Sustainability Goals, EU taxonomy and German climate protection requirements.”

Professor Dr Christoph Schalast, Managing Partner of the law firm Schalast, explains: "The area of real estate has a long tradition at Schalast, inter alia at the interface with the notary's office, and is strategically important for us, not least as a key sector in the area of sustainability. With his many years of experience in all areas of real estate law, including cross-border transactions, Markus Ruhmann is exactly the right person to build up a future-oriented real estate practice with us. We are very pleased to have him, Lorenz Bock and Detlef Kuhlen join us.
